Mike Waugh followed up the Saturday Monster Triathlon with a Sunday duathlon on on June 21 (Fathers Day). The race is the Music City Du Run Run and it consists of a 2-mile grass run, 10-mile road bike and another 2-mile grass run. The race is conducted by the Nashville Triathlon Club (formerly GNAC). The Club’s motto is, “Go out hard, surge in the middle, pick it up at the end” and Mike races by this motto.
Mike is 39 but racing as a 40-year-old as he will turn 40 in 2009. When the results were posted, Mike became concerned because his name was not posted in his age group. He inquired about it and they told him they fixed it. Then at the awards ceremony they called his name as the overall Masters winner. “What?” Mike said. He went up to the announcer and said, “But I’m only 40.” She said, “That puts you in the Masters category. Congratulations!” When he returned to his place next to Campbell Ridley, he said, “I guess I’m in with the old guys now.”
Mike was surprised by this award because he was in moderate condition (and raced the previous day). He was especially glad that he picked it up at the end to pass the person who would have otherwise been first Masters. He received a bag full of cool prizes, including a gift certificate for Fleet Feet for $50 which he discovered later at home.
Mike is probably still contemplating this over-40 thing and trying to decide if this is the highest award he has received in his racing career. It may have kick-started his new Master career. FULL RESULTS
