Gale Moore cut a minute off of last year’s race to place 11th overall female and first female over 50 (Grand Master). She was given the award of third female Master (40+). Kim Heyning placed 2nd out of 64 women in the 40-44 group.

Nashville’s New Years Resolution Run was conducted on Saturday, December 31, 2012. It changed from a Nashville Striders event to an I Run For the Party event. The course changed to a down and back from downtown Broadway to Music Row. Gale Moore cut a minute off of last year’s race to place 11th overall female and first female over 50 (Grand Master). She was given the award of third Master (40+).

There were 1022 finishers, up from 754 last year. The race website posted results in order of Gun Time. This place has it in order of Chip Time. For the results below, I used the placing from the Gun Time.

St. Jude Half Marathon

Natalie Counts hit a PR with her time of 1:48:36 at the St. Jude Half Marathon on December 3rd (2011). Amanda Smith ran-walked her first first half marathon, and her mom, Tomi Smith, hung with her. There were 6783 total participants. Full Results

Rocket City Marathon

We had an impressive group who ran very well at the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville Alabama on December 10 (2011). For ultra distance runner, Zane Smith, this marathon was a short event. He topped the list with a 3:41:04 running the first half at an 8:03 pace and the latter half at 8:49. Gale Moore placed the best with a 9th place in the 50-54 female grouping.

Gale Moore and Chris Brown stuck together for the entirety. Tina Seago accompanied them for a significant portion but dropped out at mile 18 with a leg injury. Melissa Meador, Amanda Farmer and Cindy Davis spent several miles together. Meador and Farmer PR’d this marathon by 54 minutes and 65 minutes respectively. It was Cindy Davis’ first-ever marathon and she fought leg cramps during the last six miles. Natalie Counts PR’d a half marathon just one week prior to this race and still ran well at this marathon. Chattanooga to Nashville Relay

On November 5-6, 2011, a team of a dozen runners from Columbia participated in the Ragnar Relay from Chattanooga to Nashville. This was the second year for virtually the same group. Last year’s team was Stephanie Robinette, Patrick Carter, Kelly Powell, Norma Powell, Tomi Smith, Rick Harris, Nathan Miller, Ashley Miller, Julie (Williams) Briggs, Becky (Hewgley) Ramer, Shane Wilson and Jason Ward. This year Jenny Adcox was sub’d in for someone.

They finished in 30 hours 26 minutes placing 77th out of 105 mixed open teams. Last year’s result was 29:45. Full Results

Patrick Carter was asked to give some highlights. Here is his email response:

Our official team name was “Night Train” however Van #2, also known as the “fun van” became unofficially known as “Occupy Ragnar”-we were protesting the elite 1% of runners. We caused quite a stir in Nashville with some of the real Occupiers.

I got shafted again and ran up Monteagle. I spanked it according to Kelly Powell.

Costumes were the brainchild of Tomi. We each tried on different wigs and had fun with it.

Stephanie was selected to be Vanna White during the safety meeting because when a volunteer was requested we literally pushed her into service. She did a fine job and should be commended on her ability to hold a sign without getting too shaky.

Special thanks to Ashley’s mother who fed us delicious lasagna in the middle of the night and let us crash at her house for a while.

We watched and laughed at many you tube videos including but not limited to the honey badger.

Kelly didn’t change as much this year and did NOT get one honk in response to what we wrote on his door “Honk if you think I’m sexy”. Rick had many admirers in response to what was written on his door “I like men, little men”.

Anyway we had a blast, ran fast and are now contemplating Key West Ragnar 2013.

Anderson 7:08 pace at Nashville 1/2 Marathon

The Nashville Half Marathon on November 12, 2011, started next to the Hard Rock Cafe and followed a route through the best of Nashville. It includeed the Gulch, Music Row, encircling downtown, running along the Cumberland River to Shelby Park, crossing the steep Woodland Bridge, and finishing at Hard Rock. The weather was moderate with a bit of wind. The finishing medal was all the rave.

There were 1745 finishers, 60% of which were women, and the I-Run-The-Party event included free beer at the ensuing party at Riverfront Park. Full Results.

Brad Anderson covered the course at an average pace of 7:08 per mile and placed 6th out of 101 in the 25-29 males. Jerry Houston and Tom Winters also placed high in their respective age groups.

Boulevard Bolt 5-Mile brings 8200

Running and walking a 5-Mile race on Thanksgiving morning is a great way to prepare for the meal that will come later. At least 8200 people think so because this is how many met at Belle Meade Boulevard in Nashville on November 27, 2011. As a result $1.6 Million was donated to homeless charities.

Only the first 2500 preregistered runners get a timing chip, so there may be others from this area who participated but were not timed. The finish results only have 2195 finishers. Full Results

Leach 11 hours at Ironman Florida

Bob Boehm, Christian Cahill and Duane Leach competed in the Florida Ironman on November 5, 2011. Duane Leach biked 20.4 mph and ran a 4:12 marathon to finish in 11:02:26. It was a top 8% finish in age group and this time puts Leach at the top of the local leader board where Mike Waugh was previously sitting with his 11:13:00 time from 2003. Leach’s goal was 12 hours and he followed a 39-week program purchased from Ben Greenfield in pursuit. Leach commented, “I never in my wildest dreams considered 11 hours within reach. Throughout the race I was just smiling because of the cushions I was building to break 12 hours. I was completely surprised to find myself running 9:08 miles for the first 11 miles. It wasn’t until 11-miles to go that I decided to calculate the prospect of an 11 hour finish. I calculated that holding a 10-minute mile pace would get it, so I began pursuing it. I was getting weary but somehow I gained two minutes to spare by the time I finished. Unfortunately my watch time was four minutes faster than the official time. Not sure what happened to my watch.” Leach was on the verge of collapsing at the finish and was wheel-chaired to the medical tent for observation (no I.V. given).

This was Bob Boehm’s third Ironman, Christian Cahill’s sixth and Duane Leach’s first (and only he says). There were 2700 race participants that came from all 50 states and 37 countries. The ocean was almost wave-less; the temperature started at 50 degrees and climbed to 70 degrees; the wind was 10-15 mph. Full Results. Duane’s Ironman Blog.

Cindy Davis tops at M’boro Middle Half

Cindy Davis ran an 8:13 pace at the The Middle Half marathon in Murfreesboro on October 15, 2011. According to the split records Davis was sitting on an 8:12 pace at 6.3miles, so she held an even pace throughout. Stephanie Robinette was 3 minutes behind Davis and place 5th in her age group. Nettleton, Hartsfield 2-3 at NashVegas Tri

In the Tommy Nettleton versus Chris Hartsfield competition, Tommy Nettleton evened the score to 1-1. Nettleton placed 2nd overall and Hartsfield placed 3rd overall in the sprint distance NashVegas Triathlon on September 10.

Bob Boehm and Duane Leach competed in the Half Iron distance event in preparation for their upcoming Ironman commitment and placed well in their respective grouping. Christine Schmalzer of Summertown competed in the Olympic distance.

The Start 2 Finish management group from Memphis conducted three triathlons of different lengths at the same time at Ashland City, TN. They did a superb job and the venue was very nice. The run course for the longer two races included the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail (Rails To Trails), and its ease, scenery and shade were a pleasure.
