Darren Dykes and Jonathan Winchester of Columbia frequently trained together to prepare for the Chattanooga Ironman on September 27, 2015. On race day, Darren was forty minutes ahead of Jon after the swim and bike. Jon caught up with Darren at about mile 20 of the run and they stuck together for the remainder.
This was Darren’s third Ironman and his time of 13:28 landed in between his other Ironman races of 13:18 and 13:33. Jonathan says this was his first “and only” Ironman.
The race results are separated into wetsuits and non-wetsuits. Jon and Darren are in the wetsuit results. The downstream current for the 2.4-mile swim in the Tennessee River aided the swim time. The bike was stretched 4 extra miles to 116 miles due to construction issues, but this gave some offset for the downstream advantage. The run was the standard 26.2 miles. The two-lap bike course is rather hilly with 4800 feet of elevation gain. The two-lap run course is flat along the river, but then they take a bridge over the river and take in four tough hills. This gets repeated for a total of 1234 feet of elevation gain.
